Energy Efficiency
For most, this is a top consideration. A window can look beautiful and not be energy efficient. If you opt for the lowest priced windows you can find, you’re not likely to get the money-saving features you want—and that will end up costing you more money over time. There are several things that contribute to the energy efficiency of a window including:
· U-Value: This is a measurement of a window’s heat loss resistance
· Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): This is a biggie in a warm climate like Florida’s. The SHGC measures the amount of heat that is able to enter through the glass.
· Air Leakage: This is a measurement of how much air will enter through a square foot section of window.
Note that U-values typically range from .20-1.20 and SHGCs range from 0-1. In all of the above features, a lower number is better.
Styles of Windows
Now that you’re armed with some information about what to look for in an energy-efficient window, you’re ready for the fun stuff! When choosing replacement windows, you’ll want to consider how the new windows will complement the architecture of your home, how much light will be brought in, ease of use, and the size of the window for each of your rooms. In addition to the double-hung windows you see on many homes, several other styles are available including:
· Awning Windows: A stylish look that adds a touch of charm to any style home.
· Bay Windows: The classic look of a bay window opens up the space and provides a spot for a window seat or other feature.
· Bow Windows: Similar to bay windows, bow windows form a gentle curve and offer endless design possibilities.
· Casement Windows: These windows are a great choice if you want to introduce abundant fresh air into a space.
· Picture Windows: Enjoy the view with a stunning picture window.
· Sliding Windows: Perfect for hard-to-reach spaces, sliding windows only require one hand to operate.
· Shape Windows: Add architectural details and create a custom look with durable shape windows.
